Hood Feminism
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall. However, they should because food insecurity, lack of access to medical care, poor-quality education, and poverty are issues which are all too prevalent but are not commonly addressed amongst feminists. This, Kendall argues, leads to feminism not aiding the survival of the many women but simply increasing privilege for the few. This has led to many women feeling forgotten or left behind and this issue can be exacerbated when white feminists fail to consider intersectionality in their feminism and overlook how races, class, and sexual orientation can intersect with gender. Kendall issues a reminder through this book that feminism can’t make adequate progress if some women within might be oppressing others.
